I really enjoyed my time spent with the South Dakota Library Challenge. I learned about tons of great resources.I am looking forward to adding some of the the resources into my curriculum. Next year when we talk about different habitats I am going to have my students do some research using World Book Kids and World Book Students.
I have shared my findings with friends and family. We discussed how Learning Express would be a great way for students to prepare for the online Dakota Step tests next year. I also shared Ancestry library with my family and my mom is excited for me to get home and show her what I found.
Thank you for this opportunity.

Lesson 9
Ancestry Library
When searching for myself I didnt find much. I only found information saying were I was born and my father''s name.Next I searched for my grandfather who passed away January 10, 2011. I could believe the information I found on him. I found his obituary, a website that showed his gravesite and a picture of him, his marriage certificate, census records from 1940 when he was 14, and his addresses and phone numbers.
I was able to go to family tree and see all the information on one page.
I am totally amazed by my findings and a little freaked out that all this information is so easy to access.
When searching "South Dakota" I found alot of yearbook entries, but I also found family pictures and famous baseball players that came out of South Dakota.
Heritage Quest
I found a book on my home town's history. The book was dated 1861-1961. It was very interesting to see what has changed.Sanborn Maps
I tried to search for my hometown, Rosholt, SD but their wasn't a map for it. So I searched the next best thing my current town Volga, SD. The most current map was 1925. I did find the railroad tracks, which are is the same location today.Wednesday, March 13, 2013
Lesson 8
Archive Grid
When typing Sitting Bull Autograph Card into the search box I found out that another name for sitting bull was Tatanka Iyotake. I continue my search through Archive Grid and decided to do my own search on Anne Frank. I found a few articles on issues with the book and movie, but I also found a very interesting collection from the Mary Lane papers. This collection was from a lady who after reading Anne Frank Diary started writing letters back and forth with Otto Frank, Anne's father. This collection is found at Emory University.
CAMIO
I have been really frustrated with this post. I have done the post atleast 4 times but an error occurs because I am trying to make my blog look nice and throw in pictures. Any how I have learned my lesson and will not be using pictures.
Paul Revere- When searching him I found beautiful artwork and a spoon.
Sioux- When I searched sioux I found clothing worn by the Native people and beautiful paintings of the Native people.
Georgia O'' Keeffe -I found alot of her wonderful art. I like how I could search by format, year, creator, and subject on the left side. Being able to put my results in order by date, title, image etc was also a nice feature.
I could easily use this tool in my classroom when we do art studies. I can pull up different work from each artist we study and give students time to view the art work. I like that I could add some of the works to favorites so when I want to show work to students I can just pull up the slideshow. Great Feature!

Lesson 7
WorldCat
I started my search with a popular character in my classroom, Skippyjon Jones. I found tops of books with this character. Next I did a search for Dr. Seuss and found all the book he ever wrote. I was able to look and see which libraries around me have this book. I also like that it tells me the genre of the material. I could use this when teaching fiction and nonfiction to my first grade students. I could simply have they search some of their favorite books and tell me whether they are fiction or nonfiction and why.I searched Llama Llama Mad at Mama, and found that 1996 libraries carry this book. Alexander Mitchell library is the top library.
Call Number:LC: PZ8.3.D498; Dewey: [E]
Other books by Anna Dewdney: Llama Llama Red Pajama, Llama Llama Misses Mama, Nobunny's Perfect
Subject: Coming on Home Soon, Are you My Mother, Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What do you See?
You can search for different versions that have the same title and author.
The OAIster
I chose Sweet Clover in Great Plains Farming. I like how this is set up to read like a book. It can my formated to text so it is easier to read as well. If you need to come back to the book at a later date you can just jump to the page you were on. Great tool.Friday, March 1, 2013
Lesson 6
Ebooks on EbscoHost
1. What a FANTASTIC tool. I searched "Classroom Management" and was so impressed with the results. I decided to look into the first Ebook The Classroom of Choice. I really like all the feature of this tool. I think its great that you can set up an account and save ebooks to folders to read at a later date. Once I got into the ebook I was again impressed with the desigsn, very user friendly.
2.* The Constitution, the Law, and Freedom of Expression, 1787-1987
http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=2272&site=ehost-live
* The Constitution of the United States of America

3. *True West : Authenticity and the American West / Edited By William R. Handley and Nathaniel Lewis
*Scenes of Visionary Enchantment : Reflections on Lewis and Clark
I don''t think this was a very good search. I researched "western history" and got better results.

Lesson 5
Gale Virtual Reference Library
I picked Worldmark Encyclopedia of the States vol. 2 as my book. I found South Dakota and discovered all the state information. This is a grade reference for my first grade students when we talk about the state they live in. When I teach the state we discuss the state flower, bird, animal, motto etc. So we will use this reference to find the information and then move onto World Book Kids to find more information along with pictures. What foods have zinc in them?
I searched keyword "zinc" and found The Gale Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health. I moved down the table of content until I found '"zinc." I simple scanned the article and found a header which read Natural sources.
*Foods with zinc that is better utilized include beef, chicken, turkey,
milk, cheese, and yogurt. Pure maple syrup also is a good dose of zinc.
Literacy Criticism of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
I simple search the book title and was amazed to find 84 results. The first result Literary Themes for Students: The American Dream was great reference that gave a brief overview of what to expect to each set of chapters. Students can also expand on their search by using the related searches on the left hand side.
Once again I found the 'listen feature to be very useful with the primary age group that I have. Students are not limited to the knowledge they learn because they can' not read at this higher level. I also think this again would be useful for students that do not speak the English language.

Lesson 4
Proquest
1.I searched "first grade success," which was a broad search. However I came up with a lot of great articles. I chose an article about the impact preschool has on the social aspect of first grade students. It was very interesting to read how important preschool truly is. It had a great argument that even if the student is ready academically, social skills are key to early education.
I liked that the article could be printed, saved and emailed. I also could continue with my search by going to the right hand side and finding other articles with shared references.
2.When I did a publication search I first search for "first grade teacher" and got 0 results. Next I search for "first grade" and got 0 results once again. Finally I search "teacher" and came up with 75 publications, some of which are useful to me and others which are not. It was nice to have the results in alphabetical order. I also found the key on the right side (source type) to be very useful. I am not sure how I would use this in my first grade classroom. Students at my level need pictures and simple text to learn.

Lesson 3
SIRS Discoverer
1.When searching armadillos in SIRS Discoverer I found many great articles. My first impression was that I really like how I could sort the results by lexile levels. I also found the key at the top to be very helpful telling me the difficulty, if I could find a picture in the article, activities, PDFs etc. I also found it to be very helpful that articles could be emailed to yourself or others working on the article with you.

2.Database Features
Country Facts is a great source when students are studying different countries. I really liked that once you picked a country it showed a timeline of important topics in the history of that country. It would be easy for students to continue research because of the additional hyperlinks to more resources. The basic information on the left hand side is also very interesting when comparing countries.
Maps of the World is a great resource for labeling capitals, states and getting the basic idea of the shape of each state, country etc. I think this will be a great resource for me to use in my first grade classroom when we discuss where we live.
The Educator' Resources is a great tool to be used to help students get familiar with research. I went into Elementary workbook and thought all the lessons were easy to follow and some easy enough for my young learners. As a first grade teacher I could walk through the lesson with a whole group or would feel comfortable enough to allow them to go step by step on their own computers.
SIRS Issues Researcher
1. I picked Gun Control as my leading topic. The overview was set up with keywords to know, pros and cons, different perspectives on the topic, a general overview, and other resources. I think its great that yet again this information can be read to the student. Also it has MLA citation and a simple summary on the right hand side.

2.The Curriculum Pathfinder is a great tool for teachers and students. This resources includes games, articles, interactive quizzes etc. Even though this resource to geared towards grades 6-12 I did find a few games I can use such as funbrain and supermathworld.

Lesson 2
Lesson 2
I think the Learning Express Library is amazing. I wish I would have had something like this when I was taking the ACT and Praxis tests. I decided to try the 4th grade reading test. The layout was great and I liked that I got results right away. I also think its great that you can stop and it saves it so you can go back and continue at a later time.
Next I moved onto the Job Search and Workplace Skills, I looked over the course entitled "Choosing the Right Words." I really like how this class was set up, with a short introduction followed by more in depth information. I like the idea of being quizzed over each small topic before moving on to the next one. I also thought the course outline was helpful because you may want to skip skills you already know and move on to ones you need more help with.
For my ebook search I found an ebook called Becoming a Teacher. It was easy to read and laid out nicely.
Great resource!!!

Lesson 1c
World Book Foreign Language Edition
The visual dictionary is really neat. I can use this source when we are discussing different cultures in my classroom. If I had a spanish/french speaking student in my class this would be a great resource for that student to use to explain themselves to other students. This feature could also be used to teach another language to students. The read-aloud feature could be used in the same way, to help ESL students excel or to teach English language students another language.

World Book Kids Online

There are two kinds of elephants. African elephants live only in Africa. Asian elephants, also known as Indian elephants, live in India and Southeast Asia. An elephant lives about 65 years.
World Book Online Info Finder
When searching the same mammal I found that Info Finder had a lot more information than Kids Online. Info finder went into details about the kinds of elephants, the body parts, and how to protect them.
World Book Online Reference Center
Reference Center is equivalent to World Book Advanced. Again I would mostly likely use the pictures, videos and animations for my first grade students. I did find some websites that would hold me students interest as well.
